      FILE - [no title] - ref. 212B/655 - date: 1785 July 27 - Place: Bratton
      Contents
      (1) Pepler, Daniel, of Edington, yeoman. (2) Pepler, James, blacksmith. (3) Whitaker, Humphrey, gentleman. (4) Aldridge, William, gentleman. Mortgage of a cottage.

Daniel Pepler was born in Edington on 29 January 1733 (New Style). Unlikemost of his siblings, he was not baptised in Edington Church or in anyneighbouring parishes.  We know nothingof his early life, before his marriage to Christian Randal of Edington. At thetime, he was described as a yeoman of the parish of Baydon, a small villageclose to the Berkshire border. The marriage was by licence, and the bond wasissued on the previous day (7 January 1761); the other party to the bond wasMatthew Jones of the parish of St John the Baptist, Devizes.

Daniel and Christian returned to live in Baydon until at least 1767. Mostof their children were born there and baptised in Baydon Church, where they areall recorded under the name Pepperel. They are also listed in the family Bible
Mary born 4 December and baptised 6 December 1761
Robertborn 27 April and baptised 8 May 1763
WilliamBartle born 28 February and baptised 24 March 1765
Danielbaptised 8 February and buried 26 February 1767

By 1769 the family had returned to Edington. It may or may not becoincidence that Daniel returned at about the time his father died. Furtherchildren were born in Edington.
Joseph born 16 February andbaptised in Edington 5 March 1769 (parents wrongly recorded as Daniel  and Katherine)
John Harman  born 19 June 1770, and presumably died aninfant some time before 1772  (seebelow); he is recorded in a crumbling inscription on his father's tombstone in Edington Churchyard.

In 1772, Daniel is recorded in a poll book as freeholder and occupier ofa house and lands in Tinhead, worth at least 40/- per annum.  In the same year, Christian's cousin, WilliamBartle died; he was the son of Christian's uncle Robert Bartle. In his will, written in January and proved on 4 June 1772, he left land in Edington toRobert Pepler (after the death of his wife Martha), and legacies to Christian(£50), to Mary (£100), to William Bartle (£100) and to Joseph (£100).

On 21 September 1780, Daniel, described as a widower aged 47, married, bylicence, Elizabeth Hicks, a widow, aged 40, in Seend Church, Elizabeth'sparish.  She was born Elizabeth Longc1740.

It appears that in the 1780s and 1790s, Daniel moved from Tinhead toErlestoke.  In the land tax assessmentfor 1780, Daniel was assessed at a total of £11-17s-6d in the parish ofEdington, including an assessment of £10-13s-11d for East Down, which was thelargest single assessment in the parish. From 1783 onwards he is no longer recorded as the occupier, and by 1790his total assessment in the parish was only 16s and 3 farthings. He firstappears in Erlestoke land tax assessments in 1792, when he was assessed at£20-11s. He is described as of Erlestoke, farmer, in 1798

Daniel was buried in Edington on 27 October 1801; he is recorded in theregister as 68 years old, from Erlestoke. His will was made on 23 June and proved on 17 December 1801.  He left property at West Coulston to his wifeElizabeth for life, thereafter to his grandsons Joseph and Thomas Paviour, sonsof his daughter Mary); 6 tenements and gardens in Hilperton to his son James;and the rest of his property (apart from household goods and furniture dividedbetween his other 3 children) to his son Robert who was appointed soleexecutor.  His effects were valued atunder £600.
