  • Notes
    • For the Franschhoek wine tasting the tour visits the Rickety Bridge wine estate which was originally part of the old french La Provence farm.Over the years the La Provence farm was subdivided and in May 1797 a quitrent grant was given to the widow Paulina de Villiers who received a portion of land which she called Paulina’s Drift.Paulina’s Drift was sold to Pieter de Villiers, under the name Zandrift and in October 1813, a portion of the Zandrift farm (the present Rickety Bridge estate) was sold to Hendrick Lodewicus Pepler. In February 1829 his widow Elizabeth Catharina de Villiers took ownership of the farm which had once again changed its name and become Paulina’s Dal.The word “Dal” is an Afrikaans and Dutch word and means valley. Paulina’s Dal was found at the other end of the river. (A river runs through the property) Over the years Elizabeth extended the farm and had 40,000 vines planted, the grapes from the farm were used for the production of wine and brandy.
In 1831 Paulina’s Dal was given to Elizabeth’s son, Abraham Johannes Pepler. The manor house where the tastings are held was built by Abraham between 1829 and 1831.
