I thought you might be interested to know that I have at last visited the villages of East and West Meon. They are both very pretty, typical Old English villages – something you would think of on an old Christmas Card and have not been spoiled by a lot of new builds. We went to both Churches but could not find any headstones older than 18.. something that were legible. All the old ones were weathered badly. we managed to find one in each of the church yards with a surname Knight but they were both fairly recent (within the last 100 years). I really thought there would have been more with the surname but can only assume they were amongst the old weathered ones and that the Knights had moved on or died out in that area. The church in West Meon was built during the 19th century and is a replacement for a much older church that stood about 50 yards away (somewhere in the existing churchyard). There was some old prints of the original church and I took a picture of them and will get Pete to help me send them over to you. Have not had time to look at them yet to see if they have come out clearly – fingers crossed. I came across a website with all the West and East Meon parish records on just before we went and took some print-outs with me. After taking some time searching them I believe that there is a mix up in our family history facts. Our Mary Knight was baptised in West Meon (the same as her son Henry Bell) and not East Meon. There was a Mary Knight baptised 17/04/1770 in East Meon but her parents were a Richard and Mary. I believe our Mary Knight was baptised 10/02/1771 in West Meon and her parents were Anthony and Mary. Not sure if this info needs to be amended or what to do about it but it seems far more likely that the West Meon Mary is the correct one? I also think that the East Meon Mary may have died young as there is a burial of a Mary Knight in East Meon in 1789 aged 17? Why oh! why did they not give themselves more than one name!!! A testator gave the income of all the residue of his property, subject to two annumities, to his sife for like; and, after her death , to his son for life; and then bequeathed )a second time_ the residue of his property to his son, excepting all money in the funds, which he gave to the children of his son: - Held, that after the death of the wife the son took the income of all money in the funds"for his life", as well as all the fesiduary property, since a preceding unambiguous gift cannot be cut down by subsequent implication.
